FAQ Light Rail Connection
... and has spoken out in favor of the route option that runs along Stadtfelddamm—directly through the new construction site. She has called on the MHH to consider an “attractive and sustainable light rail connection” for the new hospital building on Stadtfelddamm—and accuses the MHH of obstructionism and backward-looking attitudes. The MHH disagrees and, for its part, calls on the region to seriously consider alternatives to a route over Stadtfelddamm.
... for the new building. However, it is crucial that hospital operations are not jeopardized. Currently, the proposed route across Stadtfelddamm is not feasible for structural and operational reasons.
- Disruptions: The operation of a light rail system causes vibrations and electromagnetic interference. This would limit the usability of the MHH campus. Installing complex protective and compensatory measures is very expensive, especially since significant residual risks to the smooth operation of the MHH remain.
- Lack of space: Stadtfelddamm is not wide enough for an additional light rail line without taking away construction space from the MHH.
- Delays: A redesign would delay the current construction schedule by 1–2 years, thereby jeopardizing the start of operations in 2032.
- Cost increase: New planning would incur high additional costs that taxpayers would have to bear.
... to seriously consider alternative route options that would also allow the light rail loop to be completed, but without interfering with the new hospital building.
... the existing good public transportation connections. This is already firmly planned and is intended to ensure easy access to the new building—even without a direct light rail connection. Compared to an additional light rail connection, buses offer many advantages, such as high flexibility and short walking distances, quick implementation, and significantly lower costs.
